Our work with Dover spans multiple technologies transforming the fueling landscape. Hydrogen represents one of the greenest alternatives, emitting only water vapor and warm air, while electric vehicle charging systems offer another pathway to reducing fossil fuel dependence. For both solutions, we've created designs that prioritize reliable, safe performance while maintaining low total cost of production.
Unique Design Challenges
Each alternative fuel presents distinct challenges. Hydrogen's explosive nature and extreme cold temperature of -230 degrees Celsius demanded innovative safety solutions in both physical and digital interfaces. Meanwhile, electric vehicle infrastructure required overcoming space limitations at traditional fueling stations and addressing the need for behavioral change among consumers accustomed to quick refueling.
Our Integrated Approach
Leveraging our understanding of Dover's product ecosystem, we designed modular systems that balance aesthetics, functionality, and efficiency across the production value chain. Guided by key factors such as ergonomics, brand identity, cost, and environmental impact, we focused on creating adaptable components that seamlessly integrate across different products—preserving essential details while maximizing flexibility.
To ensure our solutions truly met user needs, we conducted in-depth interviews and observations, uncovering how people interact with refueling, payment systems, and overall handling. These insights shaped a design approach that prioritizes accessibility and ease of use, making interactive surfaces intuitive—whether for hydrogen dispensers, EV charging stations, or traditional fuel systems.
For hydrogen dispensers, we developed European-focused digital interfaces that recognize regional behavior patterns and guide users of all experience levels. Meanwhile, our EV charging solution features a space-efficient layout with sleek charging posts connected to a central power cabinet, allowing even the smallest stations to incorporate EV charging without crowding the forecourt.
Refining Established Systems
While we help Dover pioneer clean energy solutions, we've also applied our design expertise to traditional fuel dispensers. These systems remain vital infrastructure worldwide, serving millions of vehicles daily.
