ESTER GIVING NATURE A VOICE

ANALYZING ECOSYSTEM SERVICES
A tool for development projects to harness nature's built-in services, helping create more resilient cities and climate-adapted communities by measuring ecosystems' contributions to society. Based on Boverkets Excel-based tool Ester 2.0.

Challenge

Ecosystem services are used to meet the demands of urban development, providing guidelines to ensure that a site retains its natural ecosystem when touched by human development.

However, until the Ester application, the tools available for recording and mapping ecosystem services were not collaborative, with individual measurements, meaning there was no set standard to base an analysis on. During the work and after the analysis was finalised, the report was stored locally, which limited the knowledge sharing and best practices.

Solution

Through extensive research of existing tools and stakeholder interviews across industries and users, we identified the requirements to thoroughly analyse the ecosystem services. Now, we're giving nature a voice by transforming Ester into an intelligent digital tool that leverages geodata, facilitates project knowledge exchange, and offers accessible insights for decision-makers. Ensuring that no information is lost between the field and the office, the tablet-based interface allows you to map areas, take pictures, make notes and record findings in real time.
